Well my car just quit and wouldn't start, towed to BMW dealer....blah blah $3000 for new exhaust and some other crap. I was pushing a 1221 code so I guess I need a new o2 sensor (can someone confirm that 1221 means replace the sensor on the exhaust pipe...they are pretty expensive).

Cool thing is that when it came down from the tow it started, dealer looked at it, and the car has been fine for 3 weeks. Then it died again. Towed it to friends driveway...it has never started again. I pulled up the back seat and have confirmed that the fuel pump is not pumping.

I feel like I should run out and buy a fuel pump but are there other things that could be wrong? I have read a bit about relays and fuses. Where should I look first? I don't mind buying a new fuel pump but if it is just a fuse...even better.

I would suggest you try to check the fuses in the fuse block, or relay block which is under the hood on your drivers side in the back on the firewall. Check the appointed fuse(s) to make sure you have not blown anything, as well as I would check your relays related to the fuel system for problems, maybe run a test on the correct one to find out if it is shorting out on you or not. Otherwise, if it were me in your position, I would remove the fuel pump, and test it with a volt meter for continuity as well as with power for voltage. Not a garuntee, but a few idea's I've had that could definitely help you trouble shoot the easy things before you go out of your way and buy things you really don't need.

Most likely the pump is bad. Check for power at the pump. The larger wires are for the pump and the smaller wires are for the sending unit. Check the 2 large wires, one is power, the other ground. If you have battery voltage at the pump, the the pump is bad. If no power, then check fuses and the pump relay.

Good advice. No power at the pump, fuse is ok. I'll pick up a relay on my way home from work tomorrow and see what happens. Thanks for your help.

I wouldn't recommend that, as jumping the pump will create a spark, and it could ignite. You can jump the pump while it's in the car, and if it works, the car will run. You can at least hear it run.
Even if you did remove it and jump it, you wouldn't know if it's putting out any pressure.

I should add, that you need to check for power as you crank over the engine. You may get a temporary voltage reading by just turning the key on, but I'd crank it over.

Well we've done it plenty of times, and its always been ok. Obviously youd let it drain all the fuel first. But anywho, if your curious about the pressure, pull the line off at the filter and crank the car over and if it just dribbles out then you need a pump.

Basically, I see no reason to pull it out to test it. If I'm pulling it out, a new one is going in.
