not really sure how the float in the tank is set up but maybe if its on a hinge after a certin point the drop gets steeper and so its not exactly accurate?
If you top off, the fill will hold a bunch of gas... no idea how much exactly. Also, when the gas light comes on, theres still like over 2 gallons in there i believe. This could have something to do with it, but you seem very off... maybe the need itself is off?
It's set up that way on my car. And my wife's VW. And my Ford pick-up. And my neighbor's Oldsmobile. Bet it's like that on pretty much all cars. why it's that way, I have no idea. I just wait til the "low fuel light" comes on, and then fill it up.

my car does the exact same thing....i don't think it's an issue as the previous bmw's i owned used to do the same thing. i usually fill it before the light comes on cuz i've heard that u don't want to two low bcuz the crap that maybe sitting at the bottom of the tank might get into your fuel line and stuff..
when i use the mpg feature, it tells me that i m running somewhere between 20/21 mpg highway/local combined...

Well, according the my owner's manual, there is still 2 gallons left when the light comes on. Haven't had any problem yet. But, you are right, it could be a concern, especially on the older cars.
