I've got a couple road trips coming up, and want to change my fluids.

How much oil do I need?

How much oil do I need for the transmission, and which red line oil should I get? Any tips or tricks when changing, I plan on changing the filter at the same time?

How much oil do I need for the differential, and again, which red line oil should I get?

If it helps, I have a 97 328is and live in upstate NY, car is driven in the winter. I've heard guys say that their transmissions shifted much better in the winter with red line in it.

All BMWs since about 1990 donít need auto box filter changes. As to oils Iíd always recommend using what the manufacture recommends, these are marked on the boxes itself. On a 1997 car you box may well be lifetime oil and doesnít require changing.
Iím a Brit and havenít heard of redline, I always use Castrol oils as theyíre recommended by most manufactures.
If your oils are changeable:

Auto box = Castrol dexron III Approx 5lt
Standard Diff = Castrol SAF OX Approx 1.5 Ė 2lt
Limited slip Diff = Castrol SAF XJ Approx 1.5 Ė 2lts

Or look at www.castrol.com

BMW has the reccomended oil type to use for eE36 cars. Go with that it will be the best. In terms of how much oil you need for fluids is determined by how much is in there already. Adding fluids in sometimes not the best way to service your car. You may need to flush out old fluids completely, clean the containers out of any residues and pour in new fluids.
