Question First time BMW owner, is this normal?

Hey guys, just bought my first BMW the other day. It runs fine, in a sense, but just have a few questions.

Whats the normal mileage per tank for this car?the guy i bought it from said it can do about 650 to 550k/full tank. I have yet to see that, im getting maybe 450-500k/full tank. And also, there are some times when the car first starts up, pulling away it seems to lag or rev high before changing out of first. It seemed that has only started happening as of late.

Lastly, sorry just want to make sure i keep the family car running, what oil should i be putting in.

specs: BMW E36 318i automatic, 1997 model.

Thanks guys, look forward to the help

Welcome to Bimmerwerkz.

The gas tank is 62L. I used to average 450-500 km a tank depending on how i drove. For about 2 years my commute was all highway for 40k and i was getting pretty close to 500 every time. Are you using premium? The higher octane (89 minimum) you use the better economy you will see.

As for oil, the top two oils as specified in the BMW LL-01 specification sheet are German Castrol 0w-30 and Mobil 1 0w-40. The German Castrol is identified by the viscosity rating in black surrounded by red. I have run Mobil 0w-40 for years. I picked up enough German Castrol on sale a while back so next oil change I will try that and see how it runs. Either is specified for your vehicle as per BMW NA - Alberta based BMW Community

Hello, I have 94 318i auto with 230K miles. I avg around 21 m/gal mostly around the city driving for comparison. I also had/have the long 1st to 2nd shift, even to 3rd sometimes.
Initial cause turned out to be low trans fluid level. I had leaks at the trans oil cooler in front of the radiator and a leak at the shift leaver seal on the trans. After all fixed it shifted much better ( this was done at 150K). Trans still working fine but still have some long shifts when cold.
Normal? Not sure but all is still working fine.

Use the designated fuel for the car, if it takes regular use regular. Also keep in mind if the car is a few or a lot of years old, compression could be down, things not working as well as new, therefore the mileage may be lower. I get around 376-400mpg on a tank of gas. I have a 98 323is with a 2.5
