Could anyone inform me the engine difference between the European E36 M3 and the American E36?
If I recall the Euro version had 315 horsepower vs. the US's 240. I know the US has stricter emissions and slightly worse fuel, necessitating a compression drop, but I fail to see how exactly that would cause a 75 horsepower differential, especially with the same displacement.
Was the cylinder head different? Different cam profiles?
I briefly searched for a thread which had this information with no success, apologies if this is an oft-discussed topic.
I'm posting because a good friend of mine will pick up a 97' E36 and wants the 'full' experience of such a car.
From what I know of the european motors there were two different ones. The first had the 287 the second had 315 in a 3.2 liter. There was a post on it here a while back but i can;t seem to find it right now. Oh yeah and I believe the american has something like 225 stock.

You will be hard pressed to find parts for the Euro-M3 in the states, just to let you know. If you go that route or you buddy does...keep in mind you may spend more money just to keep it up than if you went with the American version and tuned it yourself to smoke the Euro version. Thats my 2 cents.
