what up all?

here's my situation. i started to notice that whenever my climate control unit was on, my engine made a kind of whiney and crackly sound. I then popped the hood and noticed that it was the front fan that did this. This is not the main engine fan, but rather the AC and cooling fan. when ever this fan turns on my engine makes more noise. do you guys have any ideas as to what might be causing this or how to counter it? what drives this fan? it is electric correct? thanks for your help.

Could the fan be rubbing slightly on anything?

Maybe, but most likely when the fan turns on you are drawing more current from the alternator which in turn puts more load onto the fan belt. The extra load on the fan belt which is either not tensioned properly or is somewhat worn causes it to make more noise and whine. Therefore, check the alternator fan belt. This happens all the time with loose or worn fan belts.
