Hey guys

I go to school in urbana-champaign, but my buddy had an interview up in chicago today so he borrowed my car. The car was in good confition and everything was working fine except my power steering pump needed replacement but the dealer said if i flush out the system a few times , i should be good for now....so i did flush it twice last week.

NOW, my buddy just called me and as he was driving outside chicago to come back to champaign, the car slipped out of gear. He got it somehow to the side, and is getting a flatbed now to towe the car to a mechanic somewhere around.

The shifter seems to be working fine, but basically when he pushed down on the clutch pedal it basically seems to do nothing at all. He matched up the revs and the gear popped in first then took it to a parking lot.

THe clutch wont work when u press it down. I got a new OEM cluitch and flywheel installed 7 months ago at 100K miles. got 111K miles now.

ANY IDEA WHAT TO CHECK....pls help
thanks

Check the clutch slave lines. They're readily aparent from under the car. If there's no fluid leaking from them and the brake fluid reservoir is full then try bleeding the system.

Your friend was probably just beint a hot-shoe and boiled the fluid while pushing in the clutch and got some air in the lines (happened to me)

Try topping off your clutch slave filler device :P (I dont know the exact name.) I had the same problem with another car of mine.
Let us know what fixed it too, just incase it happens with anyone else's car !!

BMWs have a hydraulic clutch, with a master and a slave cylinder. The master is on the shaft (thru the firewall) on the clutch pedal, the slave on the tranny bellhousing.

Master failure - push on the clutch and nothing happens - this is because the seal is bad on the fluid squirts past the piston without making enough hydraulic pressure to move the clutch releast lever. Typically, the pedal may end up stuck to the floor & need to be pulled up by hand.

Slave cylinder - the fluid also bypasses the seal, but in this situation the fluid comes out the end of the slave cylinder and leaks into the bellhousing. Typically a pool up brake fluid on the ground under the bellhousing - refill & step on clutch produces a fresh stream.

Neither part is very expensive nor that hard to replace - but the master is in an inconvenient location.

hey guys
the mechanic just called and said my clutch was burnt out and i need a new one. someone did mention something about blowing out the throwout bearing which burns the clutch instantaneously....any idea ?

also when i took it to the mechanic yest, and sat it in, it worked fine for like 2 min, went in gear , drove off...and then started messing up again...is tha prob a sign that its not the cylinder but the clutch like the mechanic thinks as well ?

also does anyone know of a good after market clutch to buy ?
thanks

get the sachs kit from http://www.stopshopanddrive.com

no, if ur throughout bearing is busted, ur clutch will not go out instantly, and i dont even think it has that much effect, but anyway:

since u are already replaceing ur clutch, replace:
pressure plate(which is included in the kit)
clutch disc(obviously, included in kit)
and throughout bearing(included in kit I THINK)
replace pivot pin
if u are doing it urself, u may need some tools, but after that u still might want:

short shifter
replace bushings on the short shifter
maybe, this is kinda big, lightwheight flywheel

hey xsperf, the link does not work dude....

so the mechanic just called as he is kind enough to give me any updates he gets, the clutch master cylinder is leaking and needs to be replaced, he is opening up the transmission now to check if the clutch is gone too , which he thinks is bust cuz he saw fiberglass pieces or somethin....

my question is ...how the f*ck does this just happen while driving all of a sudden ? I had a new clutch and flywheel installed just around 10K miles ago, and when my previous clutch and flywheel was bust, i cud tell...the transmission slipped worse over time....

this time the car was perfect in terms of the clutch and no signs what so eva.....cud this have been caused by the driver (firend) or just my car is not reliable enough ? I have no clue cuz i wasnt there...any ideas ?

my link DOES work, hmm, thats funny.

try to type it in, its called stop shop and drive, or http://www.stopshopanddrive.com , it works for me.

this kit is for 200 bux, or like 210 or something, if u dont want oem, then i honestly dont know.

and if ur master cylnder is leaking, then that is ur problem, i dont think u will need a new clutch, especially when i dont reall think ANYTHING in the clutch is made out of fiberglass, or maybe the "plastic" i know is really fiberglass

however, the actual clutch is made out of some weird meterial.. and if ur clutch is gone, u would be able to smell it

ok lets hope its just the master cylinder then, that would be awesome.

what do u mean smell the clutch ? how can u smell it unless u try to smell it at the instant thats its burnt out ?

also, given the situation described above, that the car was working fine, no issues in clutch , would u guys think it was the driver or the car ? its hard to pin point but was jus wonderin....thanks

hey guys

here is the final rundown, pressure plate, clutch plate are completely burnt out....so need a new clutch kit and a master cylinder....guess i will go with the sachs kit but is there any other kit someone suggest ?

also, the flywheel is kinda damaged he said , but he said he can resurface that for a 100 bucks and it will be good...sounds ok ?

thanks
