exhaust system

Hi i bought 3sires 328i model 1996 and i found butterfly valve in the end of the rear MUFFLER from the tips i was wondering how it works. Can anyone illustrate how this system work????

not sure i understand what your asking there, but it doesn't close all the way, it's opening just varies based on exhaust pressure to maximize exhaust efficiency

Im asking because if i want change the rear mufller with performance one i have to cancel this system , so nothing will effect the engine if i cancel it right.

I think it would be the same thing as the one on VW R32's? There is a mod referred to as the flapper mod. If it is taken off the car sounds better...

Furious nailed it on the head. Exhaust valve allows the engineers to give stock headers a larger diameter without sacrificing low end torque. Large headers are dynamite for top end, but you get diminishing returns as rpms drop.

I've also read on another bimmer forum that some peeps took it off because it sounds deeper.

Uhhh yeah, that's because they're effectively doubling the final exhaust exit area. Sounds great, it's louder. But on an otherwise stock system, performance will drop. Drilling a bunch of holes in the muffler is likely to "improve" its sound as well, but not likely to improve performance.

i noticed zero difference between having it and not having it, like i said earlier it basically does nothing, it was obviously intended to, but nothing noticeable
