So I may have access to a euro spec e36 m3 engine (free). I'm wondering what I'm going to have to swap to get it working correctly in my '95 325is?
I know there are always questions like this from dreamers on the board, but i actually may have access to this, so i'd like to know what kinda $ i'd need to make it work...
let me ask my mechanic for you tonight... I'm going over to his house to drink some beers. I know what to do with a normal us engine, but not sure for a euro model.
well to reinstall the new engine your probably looking at around 3 to 4k then you have to make sure the euro engine will fit right with the 5 speed tranny consideirng the euro m3 has a 6 speed but I dont think you will have problems with that. After that your going to have to find a persont hat will smog your car cause the euro engine wont pass us emisions due to the multi throttle body and header and gas/air ratio change. thats the reason they had to drop the hp of the car so much when they impotered it to US.
not all euros have a 6 speed...some came with a 5. and about fitment issues it should be a direct fit because our m50/m52 motors are the same but the M motors are different but they all share the same chassis so the mount locations would have to be the same.

just got off the phone with him and he said it won't pass emissions. that will be your hardest part with installing an euro spec. it also depends on what year of car it came off of. if it came off of a 92-95 then it'll be a perfect match for your car except you'll need to get a custom made chip done. have autowerks.com do it. they did mine. the reason for the custom chip is they'll tune it just for that engine. call Josh there. if it came off of a car 96 and up, YOU WILL need to convert it to obd2 which sucks. he said he wasn't sure if there was any way to convert an euro engine to obd1. Call Bill Arnold's BMW in SF area they'd know more about that.
