engine won't turn over

Hi everyone this is my first time posting anything on-line, I've got a 1995 316i bmw the key was just spinning and would ever so often catch to allow the car to start, I decided that I had enough so I took the barrel out, taped the key to the ring and was using a screw driver to start the car.It worked for a few weeks, then one day I switched off the car went back to start and nothing happen, so I turn the ignition on then went under the car hook up my remote starter and the engine turn over but would not start then I check for sparks from plugs there was no sparks.now I got a new key with barrel and ring but still not turning over or starting, can anyone tell me what to do? thank you all for your help.

the barrel went on mine 2 years ago. i bought a new barrel and all the bits to replace it all. then bmw told me afterwards that they can place a needle size pin down the barrel when it is at a certain point (with the battery disconnected) and they can slide the barrel out. but me being me reaplced the whole lot. total cost was about £140 all in.
i was told i had a transponder chip in the key which activates the immobiliser so without it the engine would turn but not start.
i can only suggest popping down to bmw and buying the bits. it's easy enough to do as long as you're patient. there is a wax like covering (there was on mine) that covered the two grub screws that stop you taking it to bits
just remember also, to disconnect the battery before the 'surgery' and make sure it's all connected after before you reconnect or else your airbag light will come on and they'll sting you for another 25 quid.

Thanks alot dudehog i just came from the dealer, they told me that my key is not coded it has to match the ews . so that is my next step.
