What type of engine is in the 95 318ic (in terms of M classification)? I am just wondering if I have the 8 valve or the 16 valve engine. Is there a good site to find this type of info?
And lastly if I were to blow my engine is it a straightforward swap with another M- 4 cylinder engine? Thanks

I think the M42 is on the E30. The E36 4 cylinder are M43 or M44. I think I have an M43. Is there any way of finding out by looking at the engine. I am planning on installing the Downing Atlanta Supercharger on a fairly high milage engine. So I was thinking in the worst case if the engine blows why not put in a higher performing 4 cylinder. I would only do this if the new engine would fit exactly without any modifications (to the mount, transmission...). Of course the Supercharger still would have to fit.

it is a 16v M42.

the 91 e30's also used a M42, when they went to 1.9L in 96 the name changed to M44
