1996 328ic (convt) with 100k. Now i know the BMW engine, like most euro engines, is a peaky SOB. But this is someting different. The engine pulls well, and gradually harder as i accelerate. Then suddenly at about 4200 rpm or so it falters, almost like you took your foot off the gas, or someone cut off the fuel supply just for a nanosecond. Then it picks up where it left off, then it does it once more at 5200 or so then picks up again up till redline. Very repeatable, and typicall happens most noticeably in second gear or third gear - i think it's just more noticable int hose gears.
change fuel filter, spark plugs, air filter.. these can cause those symptoms. Even a dirty fuel pump possibly. THere are flat spots on the pwerband as well. This just may be the case as well.
In addition to the spark plugs and fuel filter mentioned earlier, you may want to check the oxygen sensor(s) since you are at 100,000 miles.
The current models call for replacement of the plugs and oxygen sensors at 100,000 miles. The older models proabably have a shorter replacement interval.

I have this same problem on my 325i. I only see it happen at the 4200 mark. Let me know if you get the issue resolved.
