Engine Problem-Sputtering - BMW Forum

I just bought a 1992 BMW 325i Sedan a couple of days ago and it seemed to run fine but it wasn't driven for any length of time. When it warms up to operating tempeture it starts to sputter (missfire) at lower rpms when you accelerate the missfire goes away until you shift into a higher gear then it returns until the rpms are increased again. It idles fine. It has 117,000 miles. Any help would be greatly appreciated before I go out a spend a ton of $$$ trying to find the problem. Thank you, Brett

I plan on trying the spark plugs and wires to start with any other thoughts? Please HELP

Hello, I use to have a 1992 e36. When performance issues creeped up, I changed the plugs to the HIGHEND Bosch, changed air filter, filled with super unleaded and chevron fuel injector cleaner. That worked 100% of the time.

Thank you agtur2001 for the input. I changed the plugs today and the cylinder closest to the fire wall was filled with a creamy mixture like oil and water. I just can't bring myself to drain the oil and find out it's way worst than I thought. Hopefully it's just a bad valve cover gasket and not the head or block being cracked. If anyone wants to come over and check for me that would be Great I just can't do it. lol and

............oh god..... sounds like a headgasket.......drain the oil dude..... and the coolant.... if there not bad replace and do a compression check and Leak down test....

Wow.. .117,000 miles and a blown head gasket. That's very rare in my book... however it does happen. Are you losing coolant?

Hmm... depending on how much $$$ you have. Your options are to do what AplineSix&Seven said then verify the gasket theory. If the gasket is really leaking... then it's time to do some engine work.

If the guy who sold the beemer to you already knew... he probably added some "stop leak" to the radiator to plug the hole while he sold the car.

So I was prepard to do the valve cover gasket but NOT the head gasket. Could somebody come over and hide my Gun because I think I might be going hunting!!!

I BAD, No!!! It ran great. I didn't see any signs of water in the oil or oil in the coolant. He had all the reciepts of the work done. I'm just a jerk for trusting him that the car was mechanically in "Great Shape". I think I'm going to go jump out the window now!!! Damn I forgot I live in a ranch style house.
