engine options?

greetings all, without opting for the m3 engines, what will fit into my car with no mods. my car is a 328i manual touring. i was thinking about:
e36: 325i engine and the regular 328i engine
e46: 325i engine, 328i engine and the 330i engine

what worries me is the double vanos thing. will these engines be a straight swao for my e36?

my current engine is on it's last valves so i like the options available.

Why not just change the top-end?

i can do that? i guess thats always an option but its using oil so the rings are tired now.
i'm of two minds whether to keep it and turn it into a project or save up and get a 2007 style 530d.
