hey guys do you any of you know why my engine might be clicking when im sitting still and i rev my engine, it revs up fine etc, but you can hear a click click click all the wayup... my friend thought i needed more oil (checked its perfeectly between the two lines, and he also thought maybe my injectors were dirty and making this noise, and told me to go buy injector cleaner. Can either of these two thiings help the clicking noise? also does anyone know what im talking about and have heard it before
Yea my car does it for a few secs during a cold start. Which is oil related obviously. In your case since it seems to be lasting even when warm it is probably the noisy lifter issue that was common on 92's. I would try the injector cleaner and go from there.
yeah my friend said something about lifters... so injector cleaner can probably take care of the lifter problem? what exactly is the lifter? and if they cleaner doesnt do it, what else could it be>?
The M50 engine is prone to have noisy lifters. If it isnt effecting performance then I owuldn't stress over it. I have heard of people putting in a little bit of ATF (because it's high dettergent) in the crankcase for 1000 miles then doing an oil change. BUT I wouldn't recommend it because along with cleaning the lifters it attacks the seals and you may get oil leaks. If you cant clean them then you have to replace them.. IF your car seems to be lagging and sluggish then it may be a cam tensioner or cam realted somehow...
This is the sound coming from the hydraulic tappets and this should be gone when the car is at operating temperature. If you always has this sound so then they are defective. unfortunately, they can't be fixed, only replaced.

Lifters ride the camshaft lobes to control the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves. Also try using a genuine BMW oil filter. Aftermarket filters do not supply enough oil to the head. They concentrate more on filtration as most large motors have lower pressure oil pumps!
okay guys i will try all of this thanks for all the help! it was great! my oil is half way between the first and second line isnt that where it is supposed to be?
yep. my 300zx used to do the exact same thing. i know its not a bmw, but it was the lifters causing the clicking noise. exept my car would make more a "tink" noise for some reason.
from what ive heard from various people / garages / bmw local specialists they all tend to do it at some point, and its usualy the lifters that are causing the noise (tappets), i also heard though that in the engines with VANOS it can be a VANOS noise, i saw someone say something to do with the timing chain as well.
what someone said earlier was right about the tappets tho, they cant be fixed, only replaced = ££.
NO, just an annoyance. Unless it's more than just sticky lifters. I give it a 95% chance that is what it is tho..Very common occurance with the M50 engine.. IF you think performance is being hindered by it then it could be cam, timing chain tensioner, vanos, etc..

okay cool thanks for all the help guys! so say later on down the road i buy some aftermarket cams... would the clickin noise go away then?
mine does that too. only after hard cornering for more than five minutes(includes drifting, not accelaration). i dont know why. i was thinking that the oil getrs to like one side of the engine or something and its not spread throughout the engine and some internals make that noise. also, after i crashed my car by drifting, it now does it on startup. i havent really driven it, just started it tho since its still not fixed and drivable.
