Electronic shift control light on

Hi, newbie here, was searching for something else and by chance came accross this site.

I started my car up today after a period of 3 weeks from a flat battery, the Electronic shift ligh is on. Has anyone experienced this before as I'm hoping someone can advice me on cost and recommend a garage to have this fixed. As I donno much about cars, I'm in between deciding dealer or indepencant garage.

Drove the car round the block, on any gear, its not accelerating feels like its taking its time moving.

I have a 92 325i and i had my electronic shift control light come on yesterday, now it has gone into failsafe mode and is in 4th when i put it in drive... what did your problem end up being?
