Hello ... I have a 1997 328i automatic convertible. A few weeks ago I pulled into a gas station and turned off the car. When I tried to restart it, it was completely dead. Not just a dead battery. All the electronics had shorted out. I moved the shifter around from park to neutral and drive, and it finally regained life and started fine. The radio read "code" and the trip odometer had reset to 0, so I know that it briefly lost all electrical power. A few days later, it did it again. I moved the shifter around and it regained life. All the electronics had to be reset again, and it has been fine for the past 2 weeks. I'm scared to stop anywhere for fear that it will short out and not restart. Any ideas?? Thanks.

Im curious, have you run your car through an automatic car wash lately? A few of the guys on this site have experienced similar symptoms and it was due to water getting into the DME. Here is a link to a thread started by one such unfortunate soul. You might PM him to get more info.....{HERE}

If it is the DME, it looks like you have to get a completely new one which isn't cheep.

some kind of electrical connection was lost. Thats similar to disconnecting your battery for a period of time. Everything was reset, including your radio, almost as if you were reinstalling it. It is asking for its user code...

he knows, he says all he did was fill it up with gas, and tried to re-start the car and nothing happened till he fiddled with the shifter.

Thanks ... no, I did not run it through a car wash. In fact, the first time it happened was a sunny day, and the second time it had been parked in my garage for a period of time. I don't even think it had been raining for days before either occasion.

hello ... an update for this problem. After almost 2 weeks, the car was dead again when I tried to start it on Friday. There was absolutely no power anywhere. I moved the shifter back and forth as I had in the past ... nothing. I opened the trunk and wiggled the positive wire on the battery, and the trunk light came on. I closed the trunk and the car started fine. Problem solved, and not a serious one at that. Thanks all.
