hey
can someone give some links to some good chips which are worth the money spent. Also, I have a 96 328i which i believe has a ODC II, is sparking or programming required or can i get one and just pop it in ?
thanks

OBDII cars cannot be chipped. TMS sells a "shark injector" and bav auto sells a similar tool, but these don't really preduce any more power, they just remove the top speed limit and the rev limiter.

hey
I dont think my car has a governor anyways cuz i hit 140 with no problems.
so how can I increase performance through chips ? sounds like the shark injector wont do that. whats my next best option to increase hp ?

flowing more air is a start. Replace your factory filter with a green filter in a debaffled airbox or a cone intake and heatsheild. The BMW exhuast system is already pretty free-flowing, but replacing it with an aftermarket will increase your HP. It may decrease your low end torque though. If you really want to get into the engine, m3 cams will make it more agressive. If you want to spend the money, you can convert it to OBDI and then use a chip, plus gain a good deal of HP just be performing the mod itself.

Hey
thanks for the info. what do u mean by : "Replace your factory filter with a green filter in a debaffled airbox or a cone intake and heatsheild."
Do you mean just change my air fitler ? like put a K&N one ? didnt understand the part about the cone intake and heatshield at all...sorry...do you mean I should put a CAI ? sorry for confusion but clarification would be appreciated.
Also about getting into the engine cams, M3 ones, how much would those cost approximately ? thanks a lot

Green Filters are a brand of filters just like K&N. They supposedly work better actually. I would get one, but I can't find one for the 318i. But yes, you do replace the stock paper filter. Debaffling the airbox means removing all the foam and plastic inside the factory airbox to create smoother air flow. The baffle in the airbox is pretty much placed there to make the stock intake more quiet. And by a cone filter and heat shield, he does basically mean a CAI. Pretty sure there is a thread in the FAQ section that explains debaffling a lot better, complete with pictures maybe?
You could probably find an Schrick M3 performance Cam kit for about $1400 bucks (bavarian autosport) or $1200 from Turnermotorsport. This covers intake and exhaust cams. Then there is always the installation unless you can do it yourself.
You could probably find used M3 cams from anywhere from $300-$700 pending on condition, mileage, wear, etc. Just search the forum and even ebay.

A CAI relocates the intake behind the foglight. A cone intake just replaces the factory box with a cone. In order for you to gain power, you would need to build or buy a heatshield to prevent it from sucking up hot air.

You can change rev limiter and top speed governor on OBDII cars with one of those code readers. We had one at school and we set this girl's camry to be governed to 60 mph :P. But then we changed it back right away because she's hot and would have killed me.

hey
i dont believe i have a governor anyways , cuz i hit 140 on my car, inless its governed at that. I dont ten to rev over 6000 in any case. I just want to do an upgrade which will increase low end torque...get me off the line quickly. cuz once i hit second I am good. its just the 0-60 i am trying to improve in a budget of 500.
thanks

there is no foam in the airbox, it's 1 or two pieces of plastic that you can remove, if your airbox has been epoxied shut, you have to break the plastic pieces in half or cut them to remove them. This dooes not produce smoother airflow, it produces less restrictive airflow.
There is an E36 DIY website in the FAQ that has links to debaffling tutorials.
