e36 won't start

This is the scenario - I sure hope one of you brain boxes out there can help!

We were having a party at my place the other day and I remember the cd I wanted was still in the car, so I turned on the ignition to get it out and like a total nerd, left the ignition switched on for a full 18 hours!

Obviously the battery was run down and probably damaged so I swapped it, I still have the same problem.

There is an electrical part on the front of the engine which buzzes and I can hear intermittent clicks coming from somewhere by the bottom of the windscreen.

The pic below shows the part in question. Any ideas? I'd be most grateful cos I haven't got a clue

I dont understand y u swapped the battery

Why didnt u just charge up the old one???? it would have been fine or u could have started her up wiv jump leads and another car!!! maybe the new batt u have put in is a pants one and dosent work anyway????? Im unable to view the pic which u have posted unfortunatly doh!

try starting the car with a jump start from another car....there are jumper points in the trunk and the hood

Hmm...Burnt fuse..silanoid...etc..all in all yr car should be fine....

Assuming the battery you swapped with is good. Clean your battery cables and make sure they are connected snug in tight on battery. IF you still get the clicking sound, it could be that your starter solenoid needs replacing.

Thanks everyone..I'll check that out.

I didn't actually CHANGE battery I swapped it out with a good one to check it. I checked my other one on another car after I'd recharged it and it wouldn't start it - so I think that one's goosed!

whereabouts are the connections in the boot?? all I seem to have is a spare wheel !

Now, I tried jumping it from the battery under the hood (bonnet for the English!) to no avail - we then tried bump starting it with the same outcome.

Sorry if I'm a drag, but I'm not too up on cars - well certainly not posh ones like BMW's!

Is the solenoid sitting on top of the start fixed to it or is it a seperate entity?

Just to get this back up on the listings in case there are anymore suggestions before I start swapping out Starting motors.
