Hi guys,
I hope this helps anyone or at least some people probably know about this. The LCD in the cluster of E36s are replaceable. Check this website on how to take out & open the cluster: There's a black retainer clip the holds the LCD and very easy to take out. Once it's out, remove the old LCD & pop in the new LCD you got. This is much better than buying a cluster and reprogramming it. Buy used cluster to take out the LCD, but just make sure the LCD works properly.

However, I believe there's another fix in which you can try. I was getting sick of looking at the LCD in my cluster since the pixel disappears whenever I drive on uneven road or pot holes but the pixels comes back after a minute or two or once the road is even. I believe the contact wires for the LCD gets loose due to vibration when driving. One way of securing this is to put double sided 3M tape(mounting tape) underneath the retaining clip that holds the LCD. This will make the contacts of the LCD not to get loose or wonder around. I have applied this and it works quite well. The pixel in my cluster doesn't disappear anymore unless I hit a deep hole on the road. Once I have enough money I'll just buy a used cluster and swap the LCD. Anyhow, I'll try to post the pix of what I did. But once you open the cluster you'll understand what I mean in regards with the retainer clip that secures the LCD in the cluster. Thanks.
