E36 Over heated motor

i have a 95 325is 2.5, i had the dreaded upper radiator line outlet break. Once i noticed the temp gauge in the red, i shut the engine down. but now the engine turns over(sounds like it is spinning very fast) but it wont crank up.

there is really no signs of water in the oil, but the oil does seem to be very dark now.

Anyone have any insights to what damage i might have done to the engine? I'm thinking that it might be the head gasket or warped the head...

I hate to say, but the head should be checked for just those issues.

i'm wondering if I need to just do the head or if i need to pull the whole motor...

It likely needs a closer look to determine that.
