E36 Oil Service Light Reset & Dash Test Codes - Any ideas?

Is there an easy way to reset the oil service light on an E36 1995 2.5TD?

I know you can buy a reset tool from various places, but whilst looking on You Tube I cam across a few videos on how to do the reset by pressing the odometer reset button whilst having the ignition key turned a certain way.

I tried it myself just out of curiosity & was left wondering what the numbers 1-6 with the different mileages meant?

Is there any way to erase or change them?

You can make a tool very easily with about $5 worth of parts from Radio Shack consisting of a diode, a grounding clamp and some wire and a using soldering gun to assemble.

You use this to ground pin #7 on the round data plug mounted on the side of the passenger side strut tower under the hood for about twelve seconds with the key turned on. Instructions to make this simple tool are available on the web for free.
