e36 help!

Hi new to this forum love my bmw's i have a 1985 323i alpina bmw motorbike and i had a 93 325i tds it died (engine was still fine of course) so i bought another 98 325i tds 140k on it bought it on the promise that it was ok as it was out of diesel so i didnt hear it go and it hadnt ran for 3 years!
I trust this friend there was a few things not connected air pipes etc but i got it going eventually!
very hard to start though winding it for ages when it goes there is loads of smoke and it stinks of diesel,it also wont idle? i have to hold my hold my foot
on the throttle and tickle it for it to run at 1000rpm?
is my 93 engine interchangeable with the 98 someone told me the 98 is fly by wire?
please help!

re:325i tds

havent done anything but the basics and panic! I didnt want to do anything rash until i asked someone who actually knows something, do you mean too much or too little? where is that on a diesel?
