Hi, I have a problem that hopefully one of you might be able to help me solve. Thanks in advance!

I have a 1997 BMW 328is with a factory radio, along with the factory CD changer in the trunk. I noticed recently that the power of the radio randomly dies out, and randomly comes on again by itself (all while the car is on). No wires seem to be loose in back, and nothing was changed in the car except for my trustworthy mechanic resetting the check engine light recently. The noteworthy part of this problem is that when the power comes on after being off (not necessarily when the car starts up), it always asks me for the security code. (As if all the power was out?) I enter it, and it works until a few minutes later when it goes out. It then usually comes back on again, and asks me for the code, etc. It's a never ending cycle, and I don't have any idea what might be causing this problem. I can add that thumping on the dash has no affect on it turning off or on! In addition, the dash lights which also light up the face of the radio (probably a separate power line) always work. It's the radio that just goes out, and will not turn on again until it wants to.

Could someone shed any light on this for me? I am trying to figure out if it is the radio going bad, or if it is something else.

Also, if you guys tell me that I need to change the factory radio, do you have any suggestions on what I can replace it with so that I can continue to use my factory CD changer in the trunk? I would really like to keep the factory look in the car if possible. I am VERY grateful for any help you could offer me!

Thank you so much!!

Check the ground. It's the brown wire, probably a bad contact where it connects to the dash/chassis. HTH

bitcore will become famous soon enough bitcore will become famous soon enough
only if the radio is broken you should change the radio.

Check the battery, it may be shot or your alternator may be on it's way out and just barly charging the battery. Usually the radio will act real funny when it dosn't get enough voltage.
Either way, it's not getting + or - voltage.

Thanks for all your suggestions! I'll check out the ground, since the alternator and battery work well.

One more note...From everything I've read and been told, there is NO aftermarket head unit that will control the BMW changer...

So can you use any cd changer with the BMW radio? or do I have to get the changer from BMW?

You can get an FM modulated changer as they are universal though they come with their own little controllers. The only thing the head unit does is supply the sound, no control. I'm having a new head unit installed this weekend so no more changer for me. If you are interested I may sell the factory changer. Only had the car a little over a week and it has worked fine thus far...send me a private message if you are interested.
