I have been told that the exhaust manifolds all have a weakness where they break right by the flange that bolts onto the engine. Is this true for all the different engines, or is it only for certain engines.
I have a 318i with an M42 motor and my manifold broke. When I bought the car a couple of years ago I noticed a hissing sound and had the manifold repaired after it completely broke off and the car started to sound like a Beetle. I have noticed the hissing sound again now only a week after having it repaired and I fear that it has broken again. Possibly poor workmanship, I hope not though. It goes "sssssssssss" when I put my foot down.
The exhaust manifold on my E36 M3 cracked just above the flange where it attached to the exhaust pipe. No cracks where it attached to the engine, though.
