E36 Engine management light?

Hi all, im new to the site and wanted to say hi and ask a real stupid noobie question lol

Iv had quite afew cars now, think this is my 12th but this is my first BM. I brought a E36 1.6 compact (98) and ya i know its slow ass and a compact but its just for getting me about, got a Surpa tt for play

Ok, stupid question time, when i start the car lately its abit lumpy, ie feels like its running on 3 cylinders or bad mixsure but does clear up quite quicky. Which then made me realise that i have never seen an Engine management light on the dash First thorghts was you dappy twat for not checking when i bought it and someones taken the bulb out to hide a fault or its just blown. So Looked in the hand book and it dosnt show one.... all cars iv owned have had a Engine management light, how does the BM show faults?

Does the manual say "Check Engine Light"(CEL) ?

No, dosnt say anything about that ether. Im guessing these cars dont have it. Gone right through the manual and it says nothing about an engine managment telltale.

How can you tell if theres an ECU error codes?
