e36 cooling system

HELP!!!!!!
my engine overheated this week while trying to get out of a severe snowdrift and most of the fluids exited via the radiator cap.
Now when i run the engine on tickover the temp gauge just keeps going up as far as 3/4 when i lose my nerve (and want to save my engine).
the problem is this;

the engine heats up but the radiator and top and bottom hoses dont,when i run it without the cap the water level rises until it blows a few bubbles and then recedes (the water is still not even warm),there are no noxious fumes coming out the tail end (hopefully the head gasket is intact).
all i can think of is a jammed thermostat but i dont want to go buy one on a maybe as they are 60 pounds sterling!
the heater also blows cold.
any ideas or confirmation would be appreciated

There may be a big air pocket in the system. Is the coolant pump good?

Most likely the t-stat stuck closed, not allowing any circulation..........

also, could be a defective water pump, only if the stock OEM plastic propeller water pump is still in there, after they age the plastic becomes brittle causing the propeller to break apart, causing the pump to fail.......if are your going to the stat, you might as well do the pump too........while you are in there, make sure you bleed the system thoroughly after you finish!

if ur cap looks worn. then get a new one . fluid shouldnt come out of the cap . its made to withstand pressure.. just a worn cap alone can cause overheating . just a little food for thought. 30 dollar from bimmer dealership. dont get no autozone crap cap
