E36 Audio Question:

Hello All,

I have a JVC aftermarket face in my 1998 328ic. I do NOT like it at all. Sound is eh, look is terrible. I would like to replace it with a BMW factory stereo. It needs to have CD and mp3 port (or i suppose i could get a adapter). Does anyone out there know what other models stereos would fit my e36? I am not experienced with audio wiring at all, as you may be able to tell from my question. The only used stereos i've seen for my year are tape decks or one at Bavarian Autosport for $800. I don't hate the JVC that much! What other series/years stereos are compatible with my e36?

dose it really need to be a bmw there are a lot of after market stereos with usb ports and audio jack inputs all with rca output for amps, where the standed stuff will only have a cd or a cassette up to about 2000 any thing with the mp3 player might be a built in unit or connected to the aircon in australia i can get a cd mp3 wma usb bluetooth and 7"flatscreen for about $700 lots of choices

Thanks. Its really just from a purist standpoint I suppose. The JVC (which has an mp3 port) just juts out too far and i think it has an air of cheapness to it. But i do appreciate what you're saying. My brother said the same thing. That i'm chasing down an antiquated overpriced replacement essentially. Thanks
