E36 328i.....camBELT or camCHAIN ???

Hi all,

i'm currently selling a 1996 328i and have been asked by an interested buyer when or if the cambelt has been changed. I always thought it was a chain not a belt in the E36 but would appreciate confirmation so i can let thew guy know.

Also, if it is a chain what is the suggested mileage for a new one? Likewise for a belt?

It is definitely a chain drive. Usually people do not change them unless there is a reason, and mileage or age isn't a good reason.
Have you changed or upgraded your cooling system ie rad, hoses, water pump? That is the question he should have asked.

no upgrades to rad, hoses, water pump etc. regullarly serviced so its been treated to plenty of oil. thanks everyone, very helpful
