Where do I start?
6 cyclinder turbo diesel automatic gearbox 160K miles (1996).
Symptom 1:
It has always started but only after excessive amount of spinning on the starter motor. The time for the engine to fire up is getting longer. After driving for a while and getting it up to normal operating temperature, then switching off, when I re-start it fires up immediately.
Symptom 2:
There's a distinct lack of power at lower revs.
Symptom 3:
I have read that this engine has a reputation for the tappets being very noisy when it is warming up. Mine is loud enough to wake up the neighbours half a mile away - sounds like the steel tracks of a battle tank on a cobbled road.
What do these symptoms indicate? Are they inter-related? Where do I start and in what order? Can I fix it with a rubber screwdriver? |
