e36 316i speedo wiring problem

hi folks,
Appreciate any help or advice with a problem I have with the speedo in my 316. I'm doing an ev conversion on this car and have removed the engine and management system. I found today that the speedometer no longer functions and i'm just trying to find out if the speedo reads the speed sensor on the diff directly or is it somehow hooked through the ecu? Also if anyone could point me in the direction of a factory wiring diagram i'd be most grate full.
many thanks,
Jack
