| hello i have a 96 model 316i compact it had 60,000 miles on the clock when i bought it. it is my third year of ownership,it has now covered 84,000 miles .i have just had the car serviced(full service history) and a week after the service the engine is now making a noise, the fuelling is correct as i have checked the plugs,so it wasnt a lean burning problem i have drained and inspected the oil which was completely clean .it is neither cam nor valve guide noise.the crank is not nocking,it dosnt sound like the water pump. it sounds very much like it is comming from the block .it did overheat briefly at low speed, but i pulled over and re tightened the loose rad cap.(refilled coolent) at this point the engine was dead quiet.it wasnt untill a week later that i notticed the new engine noise. the vehicle idles perfectly smooth and revs and drives fautlessly.the only thing i can think is that the engine may have seized slightly.but i have a hunch i would have notticed that.it is inpossible for you to diagnose without hearing ,i know, but perhaps you might know what sort of mileage to expect from one of these engines, and is it possible to describe a noise were the block itself is noisy, unless there is a particular thing on these engines that wears .it is not a knocking sound ,not a rattling valve system noise, i cant even hear the cam.it does sound like a wering sound something like the viscous fan. but not that. any thoughts |
