I have a 1995 318is and I've been dealing with this problem for a while and i havent had a chance to fix it, but now im going to try.
-when my door is closed the window goes up and down (about 1/4''), it will do this one time or for several minutes
-if i role my window down, it stops and then goes down on the way back up.
Its really starting to bother me and i really need to get it fixed. I have heard two solutions, but i want to make sure that i do the right one.
1. The window regulator is bad
2. The module that controls the windows (under the dash) is bad.
If anyone has had this problem or knows how to fix it let me know, thanks

dont some e36's put the window down automatically a little bit b4 u close the door so there is no pressure inside the car when u close the door, then goes back up...but ur one sounds a bit broken non the less hehe no idea, good luck though!!!
I believe with some e36's from build date March 94 (not sure) and onwards the windows go up and down about a quarter to half an inch when opening and closing so it is normal for it to do it ONCE when opening and once when closing (up/down cycle).
This issue happened to my 318is but it affected both windows and hazards whenever I hit a bump while driving.
Try checking the switch first, remove it and clean it and if it's still doing it then I would say it's your window regulator cause if it were the latter then both your windows would be affected.... going on your description that it is only one window with the problem.
Thanks i'll try to fix the collision sensor. When i hit bumps the window does up up and down...so i'll try to fix it. Let me know if you find anything else.

this is your door striker........ I had the same problem.. as most 2dr E36 owners have or will at some time or another.....
open your door and look at where the door latches onto.... there will be a little button on the inside of the latch which will probably appear a bit worn...
I adjusted the striker itself which is held on by those torx nuts and it solved the prob for a while... but I ended up just buying new ones
Part # : 51 21 8 105 511 @ www.bavauto.com ..... just search striker and put in your car model info
Thats what i thought it was. I asked a mech. and he said that wouldn't cause a problem. Mine is so worn that it looks like a piece is missing.
-do you think that my regulator is bad too, because when i role up my window it stops then goes down every three or four inches.

Can you not roll your window up all the way? Some Bimmers have presets that adjust the level with a tap of the switch. It's supposed to be handy for those that like their windows halfway up but it sometimes gets in the way when you release the switch too early.
No, the window just stops while being rolled up. I know that its not the switch because the switch is new. It will stop three or four times on the way up and every time its stops it will role back down.

I replaced the door striker and it fixed one of the problems. Now i still have one more problem. When i roll my window up after rolling it down it stops on the way up. Would this be the regulator?

that almost sounds like a window switch..... I've never had a prob with them in my E36.... but in both E30's I've owned, this was the case.... Try (if you haven't already) taking out the switch and cleaning the connections on it if there is corrosion built up
Originally posted by ridikuledind@Jul 31 2005, 03:05 PM What do you clean it with? Do you clean the bottom of the switch or what it connects into?

Keep in mind that there is a driver window memory reset procedure, since the driver window can be made to rull all the way up or down by the pressing the siwtch harder, there is a little procedure that has to be done so the computer knows what is closed, and what is open.
Look for this reset procedure on google,
and also keep in mind there is a magnet build into the window motor that slides off a bid, giving wrong position readings of the sensor, and so it goes nut.
Just do a little reasearch on google and youll be alright.
I dont have me laptop here, otheriwse i would give you my links and all.
Hope it helps

I fixed it...I think. It seems to be working now. I rolled down the window, then let off the switch, then i held down the switch for 10sec. After that i held down the switch to roll it up, and then i let go of the button and then held it up for 10sec. Now it works. I found someone on bimmerforums who had the same problem. Thanks for the help.
