My driver's side door doesn't open from the outside. I took it apart tonight and I think I can tell what's wrong with it, but I'm gonna struggle to explain.

It looks like there is a little cylinder that goes into this "ring" and then when you pull on the outside handle, it can't pull it back far enough because the metal has been worn a bit.

Does anyone have a clue as to what I'm talking tabout? The door opens from the inside, but not the outside. If you know what I'm talking about, do you know what it's called so I can order it? lol... Thanks for the help.

LOL
i had the same problem?? oops i mean i have the same problem. Its the latch that goes next to the door handle on the inside. I had a picture but lost it :P its made of discast and is about 4-5 cm long, so remove the trim which holds the door in place and seals the window and have a look in "provides light makes it easier" and i would bet its the same problem. To what i know there is only 1 way of fixing it, and thats been from other forum users and thats with a new door handle assemble. I am buying one out of a junk yard since i dont care about the new key design it comes with, since i use beep beep locking.
hope that helps

I had the door panel off, that's how I figured out what it was... Is there anywhere I can find a diagram of the internal parts?

Yeah, it's not stuck... I tried, and was successful more often than not a while ago, but now it looks like it just doesn't pull the pin far enough.

This is the diagram for the front doors of a 1992 325i. If your looking for a different model check the site they have diagrams for almost everything.

dude i had the exact problem with mine. i had to order a new door latch assembly from the dealership. just the part was around $280. Then i took it to my bmw mechanic and he did the work for me, because i absolutely hate getting inside the door to do those jobs. Its a good thing i didn't do it either because my mechanic had to pull half of the window completely out to get to the inside and take the assembly out. because mine is a coupe. but good luck man.

Do not know about the E36, but on my E32 there are two Bowden cables (twisted wire with a hook at each end), one for inside door handle and one for outside door handle and when I lost ability to open door from inside it was a broken Bowden cable.
