does ANYONE know how to fix this?

i have a automatic.. anyways.. my shifter (or whatever you call it on an auto) doesnt lock into position. so when i put it in Drive it likes to slowly slide OUT OF Drive. almost as if the button is always pushed in, but its not i still need to press the bottom to shift to some gears and to park. but in reverse and drive (2 important gears) it doesnt lock in and its hard to find the exact spot to leave the shifter. back before i realized this i was driving with the car half in nuetral and half in drive i found out that that was what was causeing my car to drop RPMs quickly and randomly. i have found a position that i can leave it so its fully in drive but its a real pain and confusing to have to find the EXACT spot to leave the shifter.. is there ANYONE who knows how to fix this? lol

if it was my car id remove the sump bowl and clean the filter soak it in turps or sumthing. then id put new oil in and try that down the road now 100% it will cure it but its prob the cheapest job to start with. if it does cure the prob id look into selling the car bcus it will happen again in the future. but it may be simple and just need the gearbox control unit need re-programming. if not you might need a gearbox refurb
