I know a lot of places for american cars sell replacement torque convertor plates (turbine plates?) that make the tranny feel much more stiff and add power up top. Basically its like having a slipping clutch and replacing it with a new one. But thats american car companies that like automatic transmissions in the first place.

Might as well buy a new car. Tranny swap is a bitch. Expensive as hell, and even done right destroys the resale of the car. PS. Three gears? don't the e36 has 4 sp auto. I know mine does.
depends how high of an rpm u r running. to do an easy check, go driving adn start in 1. drive till about 5000 rpms, then push up ur knob to 2, aagain 5 000 rpms, then shift to 3, 5500 rpms, adn then put it in D, if it doesnt shift then u got a serious problem on ur hands.
