DO I really need boots for my struts? - BMW Forum

Hi guys,

I am working on my struts and discovered that the rubber(spongy) thing, AKA strut boots are almost gone in both front and back. I could not find them in NAPA or Autozone. The BMW stealer sells each for $28(all for >$100).

DO I really need it?

I think your reffering to the "bump stops". If this is indeed what you are reffering to, the rubber part in the front inside the spring but above the shock, then no you don't really need them. It just stops your suspension from hitting it's self unprotected if you do bottom out your suspension, which you prolly won't do, so no you don't really need them, however I would reccomend replacing them while you have the stuff out, so if you decide to later you don't have to pull it all back apart. If it is back on the car already don't worry about it.

I decided to go ahead and get all four. I was quoted $98 for all for from the dealership. I agree with you that although my car will probably not bottom out it is better to have it anyway since I am there.

If the bump stops are taking a beating, you should also check the compression of the dampers. Check to see if their blown or weak, you may need a replacement.

I think your right and may be the reason why the bump-stoppers are completly worn out.
I know that the right front strut is leaking oil but the rear shock mounts are making a a lot of noise when the car is idling. I realized

used that when a rattling noise was coming from the rear. I looked at the rear shock and the noise was coming from the mounts vibrating.
I am still waiting the dealer to get my new bump-stoppers and will let you know .

actuallyI wish I had kept mine, I just lowered my car, I'll post pics when I find the usb link for my camera. But any way, I got a good thunk from the right front corner going over a speed bump today, guess I'll have to get used to driving a lowered car again....
