DME Replacement

im in the market for a used dme for my 1993 325i.
after removing and inspecting it was found that mine is fried (major)
i believe due to water entering the case?
the pins that show damage are B+ pins so i assume water and B+ don't get along well and there you have it fire at DME central!
will this procedure be an easy remove and replace and go?
or is their something else involved like programming or something??
i had the vehicle over at the (s)dealer and the told me that i also neede an instrument cluster because the couldn't program the DME?
i thought only ews cars needed to be programmed.

As a result of a car wash and heavy rain down here in south florida my dme got wet that it felt like someone just yanked out the battery on me in the middle of the road so after some fault tracing figured out wasn't getting any spark and all the fuses and relays checked out. So i pulled out the dme and it was drenched dried it for 24hrs under a fan and it started right up like nothing happened. Now how do i fix this leak that i suspect is coming from the seams of the windshield my weather stripping is all messed up how can i fix this problem???

you shouldnt need to re program one. i have a spare dme that i got for my car from a junker and it runs just fine. you just gotta make sure all the numbers match up. thats all.

Charlie what you experienced is a common problem on the E36. Always keep the drains by the windshield clear. Leaves and other debris cause then to get clogged and water backs up into the DME compartment. Try not to go through automatic car washes as that is the most heard complaint about where it happens.

thanks guys for the info i think il just wash the car by hand from now on and keep all the leaves out the cowl and i took time so reseal the edges from the windshield with silicone.

Your welcome. Charlie that's the best option. Unfortunately the problem wasn't fixed until 1997.
