Ok so after having a car that wouldn't start for quite some time we took the bmw to the dealer. They said we need a new computer it will be about 1k and they are car spacific and they have to order it from germany. Think there is any truth to the car spacific thing? Would I be able to find a used one and try it? I don't have much faith in the dealer after they said the #1 coil and #1 injector were bad so I replaced them and the car ran the same. So if I pay 1k for this and it still doesn't run I'm liable to shoot somone.

yes, they are car specific. There is a way to retrieve fault codes from the car and it will tell you if the DME is bad though.

when the DME goes, its a bad thing, very expensive because of the part not the labor.

Yeah but you have to check the numbers for your car. Pull your current DME and check the part number and get the same one.

Would chaning out the ECU (non dealer style)

mess with the miles and the tampered light on the cluster as it wouldn't match with the cluster?
