I consider myself some mechanical savvy so I've decided to start doing the inspections myself rather then getting ripped off.

Can anyone point me the in the right direction for a DIY and any tools that I might/should purchase.

theres lots of info on inspections avalible in the FAQ forum. as for doing each step, there are assoicated threads in the FAQ forum. most are pretty straight forward, however the few you do get in trouble with , come back and ask.
