Dirty Fuel Filter

I just had mine changed and my mechanic told me it was filthy andbadly needed a change along with the oil filter.. How can you tell usually when your fuel filter is dirty, i cant tell on MPG because i have only just got the car. So i am unable to compare it with previous driving, and also my speeds and accelerations depend on how work is going

The easiest way to tell is your MPG and driving performance. If you just got the car it is difficult to tell, but you should do a full inspection of the car and replace and fix what you can since you don't know the car history.

You can tell when it's dirty if you take the fuel filter off and put it under water tap and see how bad it would flow. Then again, you can only see it when you take it off. Replace fuel filter every 2 years at least. It's only 20 bucks (OEM)... And you can do it yourself easily.

Everything I've read on this makes it seem like it's not replaced that easily...certainly not compared to many cars where the fuel filter is in the engine compartment.

well its replaced now
i had a 318i engine with 220k and a leaking head gasket, changed the motor instead of fixing the gasket, then had all hoses, changed, new gaskets on the engine "30k's on the engine" new fuel filtre, new spark plugs, new belts gearbox oil changed, and umm thats about it

Do u think i will notice really much emprovement driving it, i was happy enuff with the performance while it was at its worst, "i dont think they are as slow and useless and everyone comments on"
