Diagnostic help--inspection /service light on

Hi everyone
Just picked up an e36 on the weekend, really nice shape for a '95
And was wondering what it typically means when inspection and service lights are illuminated? is it just oil wear and time for service interval?
As the check engine light is not on, is this only for oil change and milage based servicing??

It probably should be well checked out. But it could be just that the lights weren't reset.

Check your oil (dipstick)...if it's coffee colored, it's time to change. Get yourself a nice synthetic flavor...weight depending on your geographical location (warmer climes love a heavier oil), and filter. Give the engine an oil flush and change.
When you've done your oil change, you'll want to reset your OBDI oil & service lights. You can get the full DIY on how to do that here.
