My brother cut out his cat and resonater on his '97 nissan maxima. Don't do that, he lost horsepower. But we didn't do a very good job putting the new exhaust in, so that might have made a difference.
Yeah, it's like the old VW super beetles. They gotta have like a two foot pipe on them because of a poor head design otherwise there isn't enough back pressure and the engine loses like all its power. Kinda funny.
So anyways, to little back pressure can be bad for a car's performance. Some back pressure is needed to help keep the charge in the cylinder. But too much doesn't allow the gases to escape quickly enough. I'm not saying your car is going to suck if you take out the cat, but it's something to consider.
