Couple Of Qs On The E36 Please...

hey all,

I got a few questions here and I hope to get some insights here... as usual
Mine is an M50 320i A/T btw.

1. I think it's time to change my shocks, and I got these offers:
* Bilstein shocks
* H&R Sport shocks + springs
* or just stock Sachs shocks
Basically I want a comfortable ride but improved handling wouldn't be so bad either.


2. I hear this cracking noise from my steering wheel if i turn it all the way around!
Any idea on this?

3. People told me that I should watch for ticking sound on my engine as means the Hydraulic Valve Adjuster goes bad. When it happens, do I have to change all 24 HVA or can we detect which one goes bad?

I don’t about aftermarket shocks but the steering noise sound like the slip ring.
As to the HVAs this is always dodgy I have a mechanics stethoscope and can get to within 2 cylinder but it’s a lot of work and if I get it wrong or another one goes down not long after I have to do it all again so I recommend fitting a set of 24.

As far as shocks are concerned since you are going to be replacing the shocks you might as well put some sport springs on for like 300 bucks you can do it now rather than later. Look at the H&R cup kit, it will give the car a dropped look but maybe you will end up liking that!

As far as the ticking noise from the engine this is all news to me! I have a slight ticking noise when the engine is cold and idling, but when I run it up I can't hear it at all! Does this still sound like valves? You should look into how expensive valves are because the price may be so low for the replacement parts that it would be better just to do all of them at once, and probally replace the head gasket while you are at it, since you will be right there.
