Cold Air Intake Question

I'm fixing to buy a cold air intake, and I wanted to know if Kammotor Intake's are a good buy. I have a m42 is that a good intake or not, Paying $ 114 + $17 for shipping for a the intake and its a carbon fiber.

Heres the thing about intakes don't do much besides appearance unless paired with other parts such as turbos which needs more airflow. For a normal aspirated m42 it's just going to look cool and you might be able to hear a slight whistle but your not gonna really feel any gains in performance so if your lookin for that sort of thing think about building your engine up to handle boost or supercharge it. If your looking for more air flow because ur car is running a. Little lean by all means get one even if it is just for coolness and such.

Ok, well I have a 1992 318i and i really didn't know where to start with building the m42 up. I know intake is a start but thats it. Whats the specs on your 318i?

My 318i is pretty much stock besides the sound system and my headlights with angel eyes. The reason I'm not upgrading My 318i is because its automatic and I'm in the process of saving up for a 5spd e36 m3 coupe preferably.

Thats what I want. Why not swap the transmission for a 5 speed?

The reason I'm not swapping the trans is because the auto to manual swap kit is $2000 off of zionsvilleautoparts.com and the m42b18 is underpowered for a sedan with 130 hp and I plan on doing a project build as a hobby and I personally would like more power like the m3 and I can run lower boost then on the 318i and feel a bigger difference. If you were to turbo the 318i you can push around 225 with a good tune and 10 psi or I can save on the swap kit and boost kit plus the parts used to either build up or rebuild the engine to handle boost. So those parts are at least a total of 3500-4000 to get the engine boosted and manual. When I can sell my 318i for 4000 firm because its in mint condition and only 139k on the clock an use the 3500 to 4000 and buy a nice e36 m3 which pushes 270 stock for around 7k-8k

I was looking at the stock air box for cold intake do i need to remove the whole intake box and the sensor box too(or what ever it is after the intake to the engine)? If not would it hurt if i did?

To put in an intake the only thing you have to take out is the air intake box and the air duct before that. The duct that connects to the grill. Do not remove the piece after the box because that is your mad sensor

Yeah the maf is going to have a round end but depending from where you buy your intake from it should come with an adapter with 2 clamps to connect it
