Cluster problems - BMW Forum

I've been trying to find out whats wrong with my instrument cluster and can not find any answers. One day everything stopped working and just said "code" where the miles normally appear. About once a month the speedometer works but is way off the actual speed. I have no gas, mileage, tach, temp or anything. It also randomly reads everything in kilometers instead of mph. the trip odometer reads it kilometers but it only lasts for one start. Ive done the test for the needles and everything. Any help would be appreciated

us or euro? have you changed the battery recently?

i don't know much about this car, so i'll do what i can, but i promise nothing

its a US and i have had battery problems where I was swapping them but this cluster problem happened before the batteries started dying on me

i don't think there is a cluster self test on the e36. i think it started with the e46. i am wondering if you have a loose connection or bad harness. i have never seen one say "code". but like i said before, not too much experience with those. give me a few days and i'll ask one of the old timers at the shop.

i was told that the cluster crapped out and you need to go to the dealer and have it reprogrammed. hopefully it will accept the programing. if not, you are buying a new cluster.
