i noticed after i posted when i was outside that you just need an allen key...
my front corners went on awesome, and so did the back left tail... but the back right tail's brake light does not engage... i tried it with a few different bulbs, so i figure it's actually a problem in the circuit board of the tail... i have to take it back tomorrow, so i'm ghetto with one stock tail and one euro for the night!

Yea, I noticed the star shape too, they are also used on the head unit, allen keys do work.

It's a torques bit. Buy one of those handheld sets that has a bunch of different sizes in one tool just like they have for allen wrenches. Ask the dude working at the auto store, he'll know what you're talking about.
