see i think you should do it the other way around.... you will have the chip which yes gives you incredible power... (for my car 20+ torque and hp in the high rpms) but awwww yes a problem as everything has... you will have all this power from your chip which is there in the high rpms... problem with your stock air box in your car isnt very rev happy in the high rpms making the power of the chip less... i bought my intake felt how rev happy she was in the high rpms and ordered my chip that day.... if you dont have the money for both, and really want the power of the chip... then atleast get the stock air box out of there and replace it with like a k&n filter or something... even that will breath better than your restrictive airbox... i ran just a k&n on my 318 for a while.. then got the piping etc laster... and of course got the 325 after that.... hope this helps a little bit..
From what I understand chip and CAI work hand to hand, I personally did intake first due to budget

yeah thats pretty much how it works... i did intake first... well i guess my chip and intake were the same price... haha no i did intake first because the stock air box is i wanted my car to breath and thats what it did... the extra power of the chip is outstanding! any e36 owners 95- needs the combo!
am evenrtually gonna get a shark for mine, but that's further down in my list

I am going to do both at the same time, after i get more money. I need tires and wheels first. By the way, why the dinan? Do you just want Dinan? After doing some research you will find that there are many brands out there and a bunch are the smae if not better quality than dinan. Check this forum and you will see a bunch of different brands discussed and go to the reviews section and you can see what people think of the products they have bought.
I personally like the stuff on www.turnermotorsport.com, and www.activeautowerke.com.
Check those out. I am just kinda crazy about getting all the information possible before I buy something.
Since you presented this as an either or, I'll tell you what I did to my son's 318i. First I didn't do anything to the stock air intake box except put in a K&N filter (later I'll go the whole nine yards and put in a Dinan cold air intake). Then I chipped it, after that I found a good used stainless steel double exhaust that has a nice noise to it and a great look. He loves the look of "stock" current "3" series E 46 exhausts, now his looks just like them.
By the way, Dinan also has a automatic transmission chip to change the shift patterns, in case yours is an automatic.

ehh, i got the dinan intake... whatta waste of 400 bucks!! sure it sounds cool!! but not worth 400 bucks.. when i would have bought 1 on ebay for 50- bucks!! heh!
dinan is good to keep your warranty... other than that you are overpaying for something you could get for a few hundred less else where... its the NAME!! hahaha ECIS all the way!
