I just bought a 318i 1998, the check engine light is on, I read in the owners manual that it's got something to do with the exhaust. Do I need to take it to a shop? Is there anything I can do myself?

probably your O2 sensor, and welcome to the forums

welcome aboard, this is THE best bmw forum site you will find...real nice bunch here! BTW, that is probably your 02 sensor like he said, mine did it and I replaced it, I got my Bosch 02 sensor with the connector for like 62 bucks...Installed it myself, not hard..Fixed the problem!

another quick thing to check is make sure your gas cap is on tightly.

Thanks for the reply's. If it is the O2 sensor, where can I buy one and how do I fix it? Thanks again for the help
