Check engine light`

ok i had this problem earlier and wanted to look to see what was causing it..because the damn check engine light is turning off and on. its like every few days that it turns on..

the code i got was: P0340

the code says it is a malfuntion in the electrical circuit for the camshaft position sensor( it says "bank 1 identifies the location of Cylinder #1)

now..if it keeps turning off and on..what could that be here were the "possiblities"

1. cam sensor defective
2. connector/wiring defective
3. Engine running condition- timing belt out of time


now i am kind of hearing a noise coming from my engine and so maybe the belt is off somewhat? my idle is speratic and i don't want to see this check engine light anymore lol. any suggestions before i take it to the dealership? anyone else have this problem

What year is your car? What's the mileage? Was there any work that was done to the car before the check engine light came on?

This is a pretty common issue. It happened to me earlier this year. It most likely is your camshaft position sensor going bad. The engine will run fairly rough until you get it replaced. Take it to the dealership, but clear the code...they should be able to diagnose it correctly as being the CPS.

its a 98..its been doing it for a few weeks now with no previous work really done..

i ran the code and i think your right about the whole camshaft position sensor..it s the little thing on the front of the block correct? looks like the one from the Z4 DIY i saw on another site.

I have a 98 323is m52, well it was thowing the same code p0340 and p1519 which are codes for camshaft p sensor, of course you new that already, well if you know someone who works for bmw buy the part threw them. Quoted without the friend $143, with the friend $67. Cant beat that. Do the work yourself, hopefully you have small hands or one of your friends do... . It will take you about an hour.... I changed mine on saturday...

i noticed the check engine light only comes on in colder weather..hmmm
